Friends and Alumni:
The Burley Varsity Club wants to keep you informed on how the fund raising effort is progressing. In March, we mailed out one hundred donation letters to Friends and Alumni of Jackson P. Burley High School. Thus far, we have received $1,000.00 in the first thirty days.The goal that we have set for our projects for the year 2012 is $5,000.00. Presently, we are planning to unveil the new school sign along with the other projects in October. To accomplish the unveiling date scheduled for October, we must order the granite stone the last of June or first of July.
Friends and Alumni, our success with all of our projects depend on your financial support. Please remember all donations made to the Burley Varsity Club are tax deductible. The time is now to show that the Old Burley Spirit is still alive and well. MAKE THAT DONATION TODAY.

On Friday February 24, 2012, Burley Varsity Club Chairman Jimmy Hollins will meet with Dr Pam Moran, Superintendent of Albemarle County Public Schools. The purpose of this meeting is to discuss the club’s projects for Burley Middle School in 2012.
The Burley Varsity Club believes the Middle School student should have a connection with the past ( 1951-1967) and that period of integration that was such a pivotal part of Charlottesville / Albemarle County history.
(1) We are asking to name the media center at Burley Middle School after Mrs. Alberta H. Faulkner who was a Teacher, Librarian at Jefferson High School, Jackson P. Burley High School and Burley Middle School..
(2) We would like to acknowledge long time Jackson P. Burley High School and Middle School employee, Mr George Tinsley, by naming the road from Henry Ave down to Smith/ Jones field in his honor. Mr Tinsley doesn`t possess a college degree; however, Mr Tinsley was an important person to many young people in the area.
(3) In honor of the late Mrs Alicia Inez Bowler Lugo, the Burley Varsity Club would like to have the hallway located to the right side of the Auditorium at Burley Middle School. The Club is asking permission to name this hallway – which is lined with all the Burley High School Graduating Classes from 1951 -1967- the Alicia Inez Bowler Lugo Alumni Hallway.
(4) The last item on our list is a request from Burley Middle School Principal Sharon Wilcox for a new school sign, The Club has discussed and voted on this request. It was decided that the club will honor Principal Wilcox’s request and have a new school sign built.
The Burley Varsity Club is in the process of working on funding raising letters that will be mail out shortly to friends and alumni. We need your financial support. Please help by giving to our general fund for this year’s projects.Our fund raising goal is $5, 000 to cover these projects.
The Burley Middle School sign will be modeled after Albemarle High Schools sign. Two brick columns and granite in the middle. We are hoping to have a enough funds to place the order for the piece of granite. Which will take 60 to 90 days to be delivered once ordered.

The Burley Varsity Club is a non – profit organization. Our goals are to maintain the name and sports history of our beloved high school Jackson P. Burley, Which opened in 1951 and closed in 1967, achieving sixteen years of glory.
In April 2009, the Burley Varsity Club embarked on a bold vision of making Jackson P. Burley Middle School a historic landmark for the former Jackson P. Burley High School.
Our accomplishments over the years have been nothing less than spectacular. We have set our goals very high for the year 2012. The club have identified our project as to continue to keep the Burley mystique, memory and name alive for future generations.
We are not at the end of this journey, and now is not the time to rest on our laurels. As the year 2011 comes to an end, we ask that you consider making a tax deductible contribution to our annual fund. Your gift today will support our on- going operations and future projects.

Dear Band Alumni,
The Burley Varsity Club has asked the Albemarle County School Board to name the former Jackson P. Burley High School band room after Elmer F. “Sonny” Sampson. The club feels this is a fitting honor for the man that directed such a wonderful band for so many years . Our band was best in the State of Virginia under his leadership, winning so many awards and often invited to the Cherry Blossom parade in Washington D.C., our nations capitol.
The club thinks the best way to honor Mr. Sampson is to have a plaque made and hung on the wall inside or outside the band room. The plaque should be bronze . We are also hoping to unveil this plaque on October 7, 2011 in a program at Burley Middle School ( more on the program at a later date).
In order for our club to accomplish this goal we need to raise $1000 to pay for the plaque. To raise the $1000, we are asking the former band members and majorettes to make a $25.00 donation . Note: Because the Burley Varsity Club is a nonprofit organization, any and all donations are tax deductible.
Make all checks payable to the Burley Varsity Club and write in the note section for “Mr.Sampson’s plaque”.
We have set a dead line of August 15,2011 for having at least half of the donations to be in hand. This allow us to order the plaque in the time fot the program.
2011 FUND RAISING EVENT
Starting Saturday, February 12, 2011 , the Burley Varsity Club will kick off its fund raising campaign for the year. We have decided to do a raffle with all three prizes being cash:
(1) 1st prize is $300; (2) 2nd prize is $200; and (3) 3rd prize is $100, The tickets are $ 5.00 each. The drawing will be Saturday, April 23, 20110, at 3:00 pm at the Club Car Show being held at Burley Middle School’s back parking lot.
Note: Winner need not be present to win. A Portion of the proceeds will go toward the newly formed Stephen D.Waters Scholarship Fund
Phase II was completed December 2009. A four foot extension was added to the trophy case . All missing trophies were replaced and all of the broken ones were repaired. A walnut plaque containing the names of some 60 contributors has been ordered and will be displayed near the beautiful new trophy case.
Announcing a new fund raiser. On January 14, 2010 the Albemarle County school board approved a proposal made by the club to name the existing football and baseball fields after the former Burley High School coaches Robert Smith and Clarence Jones . The proposal requested to name the current gymnasium after former coaches Walter Greene and Albert “AP” Moore. Burley Varsity Club is requesting your help in raising funds to help purchase two plaques to be placed at both locations. The goal is to raise $4,000 to fund this project. BVC (501.c3) is none profit organization and we would appreciate your support in this endeavor.
